Why Are H1 Tags And Headers Important For SEO

H1 Tags

Headings are important for SEO as it gives a glimpse of what the TOPIC is about. Every web page contains multiple headings.

H1 is basically a short phrase or a sentence that tells us what the next part or section of your post or article is all about.

Heading [a proper one] means the reader should understand the next part of the article clearly.

In this post, I'm going to talk about H1 Tags and how it is important for SEO purposes.

What Are H1 Tags (Anyway)?

H1 Tags are, technically, TITLE of your web page of any blog or a website.

As for your kind information, there is a total of 6 header tags ranging from (H1, h2,...., H6) but H1 has a special place and impact on your webpage.

So, you can say <H1> HTML Tag as Major heading or 1st heading used as a title of a page or a post.

Earlier it was defined in very different ways as it used to be:

  • most important heading and includes the most important keyword of that page.
  • one cannot use more than one H1 tag per page.
  • considered one of the critical factors for Search Engine Optimization.

But!...

Google has made it clear that these are no longer rules and it's not necessary for you to use H1s as it is mentioned above.

In late 2019, Meuller said, having one H1 or so many H1s on a page won't affect SEO or ranking.

You can use H1s as many times as you want on a single page. Your site is going to rank perfectly with or without h1s.

That won't impact your rankings anyway.

How H1s Are Different From TITLE Tags?

First, let me make you clear that H1s and Titles both are HTML tags. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language that is used for creating a website by most website users in the world.

Title tags are shown on the browser window or on SERPs while the H1 tag is only found on the web page.

Title tags are located in the head tag of an HTML page with a code <title></title>.

A title tag is shown on the social media snippets while h1s are not necessarily shown there. H1s can be seen by users in browsing the page.

Here is a sample of how a Title tag looks like:

Why H1s Are Good For SEO

  • Navigation made easy.
  • Google might use H1s as Title tags sometimes.
  • H1 has a positive correlation with higher rankings and gives a better user experience.
  • It tells both search engine as well as website visitors what the content of your webpage is about.

Best practices:

It would be much better if you write the main heading [target keyword] of your web page in an H1 tag.

Use, if possible, one and only one h1 tag on a single web page.

Make sure to use H1s in a manner that your target audience could easily read them. Try to make it less dynamic and as simple by avoiding the use of too many keywords.

Keep it small of up to 60-70 characters.

Though you can use h1 as many times as you want, there is no limit to this according to Google's Meuller but still, you should follow the hierarchy of heading tags for a better user experience.

Conclusion:

Just by having an H1 tag on your webpage you are directly or indirectly helping your website grow its ranking.

It may not be the strongest factor for your Website's health but can contribute to the overall SEO of your website by telling both the search engines and visitors about the content of the page.

So, overall jumping directly to the conclusion part, H1s are still important for SEO purposes.
